Nicola Sturgeon calls for Boris Johnson to resign over Christmas party scandal

Nicola Sturgeon has called on Prime Minister Boris Johnson to resign over the Christmas party scandal that has engulfed the government.

The First Minister was asked by Green MSP Gillian Mackay in the Scottish Parliament if the Tory leader should step down over the row.

An investigation has been launched by Cabinet Secretary Simon Case about whether parties took place in last December when London was in lockdown.

Johnson has denied any rules were broken, however has failed to say if any parties actually took place despite a number of people who were at the gatherings that one took place.

In reply to McKay, Sturgeon said: "Yes, I do.

"While Gillian Mackay was asking a question there I had members of the Tory group shouting at me from a sedentary position that these issues had nothing to do with us in the Scottish Parliament.

"Well, I beg to differ. I think the principles and the values of openness, integrity and transparency matter to all of us who care about democracy in this country.

"I think Boris Johnson has many questions to answer there are more questions surfacing today around the whole Downing Street wallpaper issue, but I'll leave them to one side.

"I don't think it is simply a corrupt incumbent of Number 10 that has to go.

"I think it's time for Scotland to get rid of the whole broken, corrupt Westminster system that is holding us back."

Case's inquiry was ordered by the Prime Minister after a leaked video emerged showing Downing Street aides laughing about a "fictional" party at Number 10 in December 2020.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Johnson also appeared to concede that the Cabinet Secretary would be able to go further than just reviewing the events of December 18 and "look at other things", with other alleged gatherings in Downing Street over the festive period last year.

Allegra Stratton became the first casualty of the leaked footage when she, in an emotional statement to the press outside her north London home, stood down on Wednesday.
