Nicola Sturgeon announces three new coronavirus deaths overnight and 221 cases

Nicola Sturgeon has announced that three Scots have died of coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

The First Minister gave the update today in the Scottish Parliament.

Figures released reveal 221 new cases of the virus have been identified overnight.

The latest figures mean that, since the start of the pandemic, 7,633 people have lost their lives to coronavirus in Scotland.

The statistics also reveal a total of 133 people are being treated in hospital, with 20 in ICU.

2,682,706 people have received the first dose of the Covid vaccination and 605,126 received their second dose yesterday.

Case numbers in some regions of Scotland are now at their lowest level in around seven months.

In South Lanarkshire coronavirus cases fell by almost a quarter last week.

Figures published by Public Health Scotland revealed 127 new cases of the virus between Saturday, April 3 and Friday, April 9 – that's down 22.5 per cent on the previous week.

It was the fourth consecutive week that new Covid-19 cases fell after a three week spell where numbers remained fairly static.

Case numbers in the region are now at their lowest level since September, with just 0.4 cases per 1000 residents recorded last week.
