Face masks in Scotland to be mandatory on all forms of public transport as we move into phase two

Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed that face masks will be mandatory on all forms of public transport from Monday onwards.

The new rule will affect every form of transport including, buses, trains, trams, taxis and even planes and ferries.

Speaking at parliament, the she explained that the decision was made "because of the evidence that face masks can reduce the risk of the virus being transmitted"

Sturgeon said: "From Monday face-coverings will be mandatory on all public transport.

"That includes taxis and private hire cabs as well as buses, trains, the Glasgow subway, Edinburgh Trams, planes and enclosed spaces on ferries.

"This will be subject to some exceptions for example children under the age of five, people with breathing difficulties and those who have physical conditions which make it hard to keep the mask in place.

"It will also not apply to drivers who are already protected by a shield of some kind

"We believe that this measure will be increasingly important as the use of public transport increases and implementing it now will help to reduce the risk of transmission and build public confidence."
