Nicola Sturgeon announces Scottish Cup boost as League One and Two cleared for return to action

SPFL Leagues One and Two have been clubs have been given the green light to restart their season after a two-month Covid shutdown.

Football below the Championship has been suspended since January with several SPFL competitions placed in limbo.

The Scottish Cup was also mired in uncertainty with a number second-round ties still outstanding but clubs will now be allowed to take resume competitive action.

Women's football, too, faced a prolonged suspension but First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has announced play is set to resume in the SWPL and across the lower leagues.

League One and Two will resume their campaigns while certain Highland League clubs will be permitted to continue their involvement in the Scottish Cup.

The FM said: "Later today, the Public Health Minister will support the resumption of competitive football in Scottish Leagues 1 and 2, the Scottish Women’s Premier League 1 and – for the purposes of playing Scottish Cup ties – certain Highland League teams.

"I hope this news will be welcomed by football fans across the country."

The announcement on Highland League clubs will allow Formartine United, Huntly, Nairn County, Brora Rangers and Buckie Thistle to complete their second round ties.

The draw for the third round has already been made, at which point Premiership clubs enter the competition.

Despite the welcome reprieve, the tournament still faces a tight timescale for completion - quarter-final ties were originally scheduled to be played this week.

The 2019/20 edition was postponed for several months until December 2020, although by which point only four teams were left in contention.
