Nicola Sturgeon announces no Scots coronavirus deaths but 951 cases recorded overnight

Scotland has recorded no coronavirus deaths in the past 24 hours - but the First Minister warned that registration offices are closed on Sundays.

There were 951 new covid cases recorded overnight.

Of the new registered cases, 385 were in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde area, 268 were in Lanarkshire, 78 in Ayrshire and Arran and 69 in Lothian.

The rest were spread across the other health board areas.

There were 1,225 people in hospital, an increase of 32, and 93 people in intensive care, an increase of 12.

The death toll in Scotland currently stands at 2,849.

It comes as Scotland's new five-tier lockdown system came into force across the country today.

The local lockdowns range from level zero to level four - with restrictions in the highest tier as close to a full lockdown as the country experienced in March.

Each local authority's lockdown level was confirmed last week with the majority of council areas staying in tier three.

It was anticipated that Lanarkshire would go into tier four lockdown but Nicola Sturgeon confirmed the council area would too remain at tier three.

Ahead of the new lockdown measures, Nicola Sturgeon said that it was essential Scots followed the rules for their local area to prevent the entire country from entering a full lockdown again.

She said: “It is important we all comply with the rules in our area if we are to successfully suppress the virus, avoid the need for tighter restrictions, and protect the NHS.”

The Scottish Government has launched a postcode checker so people can confirm the level at which the area they live in has been placed.
