Nicola Sturgeon announces no new coronavirus deaths in Scotland as 290 new cases recorded

There have been no new deaths from coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

Nicola Sturgeon confirmed 290 more people have tested positive for Covid-19 in Scotland since yesterday.

The First Minister announced there has been no new hospital deaths from a positive case with the total number of deaths remaining at 2,501.

The total number of confirmed cases in Scotland now sits at 23,573 since the start of the pandemic in late March.

There are currently 52 patients in hospital with 5 remaining in intensive care.

The latest figures come as lockdown rules in Scotland are tightened again amid a rise in the number of confirmed coronavirus cases.

Sturgeon also told Holyrood that the “R number”, which shows how fast Covid is spreading, is as high as 1.4.

Some people have been banned from meeting in groups of more than six from two households.

The recent spike means the country is unable to move out of phase 3 of the pandemic road map next week as planned.

North and South Lanarkshire are the latest council areas to come under recent lockdown restrictions.

Scots in those areas, as well as Glasgow, West Dunbartonshire, East Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire and Renfrewshire are unable to meet up with any other households either in their own home, or inside someone else's home.

Exceptions include emergencies, those who care for vulnerable people and extended households.
