Nicola Sturgeon announces new travel restrictions to parts of England over covid infection concern

Nicola Sturgeon has announced new travel restrictions to two cities in England due to concern over covid infection levels.

Non-essential travel will not be allowed from Scotland to either Manchester or Salford.

However, the First Minister announced that travel curbs to the Republic of Ireland would be lifted.

Sturgeon this week signalled that easing covid restrictions within Scotland could be paused over high levels of the so-called Delta variant of covid.

Current rules allow travel to England, apart to a small number of urban areas .

At a media briefing, Sturgeon announced current travel curbs to Bedford and Ireland would be lifted.

But she said: “I regret, however, we are introducing restrictions on travel between Scotland and two cities in England.

“Manchester and Salford currently have high levels of covid, and so from Monday onwards non essential travel between Scotland and those cities is not permitted.”

On Ireland, she added: “Under Ireland’s current rules, you will be required to self-isolate when you arrive there.”
