Nicola Sturgeon announces new rules for close contacts of positive covid cases

Nicola Sturgeon has announced new rules for anyone in close contact with someone who tests positive for coronavirus.

From tomorrow (February 18), anyone who is traced as a close contact must get tested for covid as well as isolate for 10 days.

The First Minister said the new rules will result in further breaking chains of transmission of the virus.

Speaking at the Scottish Government, Ms Sturgeon said: "From tomorrow, the advice given to close contacts of people who test positive for Covid will change.

"As well as being asked to isolate for ten days, they will also now be asked, as a matter of course, to get tested as well.

"If they then test positive, their contacts will be traced, and more chains of transmission will be broken. So this is a further strengthening of Test & Protect."

Anyone with symptoms of covid is currently required to book a test through NHS Inform. If the test returns a positive result, they will be given a code to enter into the Protect Scotland app which will alert anyone they have been in close contact with that also has the app.

The Test & Protect team will also contact those who could have been infected to give advice to help reduce the risk of spreading the virus.

Anyone with coronavirus symptoms must isolate before their test and while waiting for their results.

The move comes as a further 1,121 new cases of the virus and 64 more deaths were reported across the country. 1,317 people are currently in hospital with Covid with a further 99 people are receiving intensive care.
