Nicola Sturgeon announces national silence to remember Scotland's covid dead

A national silence is to be held to remember those who lost their life to the pandemic on the lockdown anniversary, Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed.

The gesture will take place on March 23 – a year since lockdown came into force in the UK.

This Saturday also marks one year since the first confirmed death in Scotland of someone testing positive for coronavirus.

Speaking at her briefing, the First Minister said: “The Scottish Government has been in contact with a number of organisations to discuss how we can best mark that day and on March 22 I will meet representatives of UK Covid Families for Justice.

“Current plans for 23 March include a national silence. We are also discussing how communities can be supported to develop their own commemorative activities over the coming year, as part of longer-term plans for remembrance.

“I will set out more detail of all of this over the next fortnight.”

Giving an update on the latest coronavirus figures, Ms Sturgeon said Scotland has recorded the deaths of 19 coronavirus patients and 466 new cases in the past 24 hours.

This takes the death toll under this measure, of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days, to 7,441.

The daily test positivity rate is 3%, down from 5% on Monday.

There are 614 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus, down 40 in 24 hours, and 50 are in intensive care, down nine.

A total of 1,789,377 people have received their first dose of a coronavirus vaccine as of Tuesday morning - an increase of 14,718 in a day - and 123,686 have received their second dose.
