Nicola Sturgeon announces 'managed quarantine' for all arrivals in Scotland from abroad

Everyone who comes to Scotland directly from overseas will have to quarantine, according to the First Minister.

Nicola Sturgeon confirmed Scotland will go further than the rest of the UK in a bid to stop covid cases from abroad.

The UK Government last week announced plans for people coming from so-called “red list” countries to be placed in quarantine hotels for 10 days.

However, the action stopped short of either a full closure of the UK’s borders or hotel quarantine for everyone.

While Sturgeon welcomed the move at the time, she made clear she believed the measure did not go far enough.

In a statement to Holyrood, she said: “So the firm view of the Scottish Government is that in order to minimise the risk of new strains coming into the country, managed quarantine must be much more comprehensive.

“I can therefore confirm today that we intend to introduce a managed quarantine requirement for anyone who arrives directly into Scotland, regardless of which country they have come from.”

She added: “Obviously, we cannot unilaterally implement immediate managed quarantine for people who arrive in other parts of the UK before travelling on to Scotland.”

Sturgeon added that she would provide more detail "as soon as possible".
