Nicola Sturgeon announces loosening of wedding and funeral covid restrictions

Nicola Sturgeon has announced that some of the restrictions at weddings and funerals will be lifted from Monday onwards.

The First Minister said wedding suppliers will no longer count towards the cap on numbers and live entertainment at receptions will be allowed.

People from more than one household will also be allowed to help carry a coffin.

Tight restrictions have been in place on weddings and funerals since the first lockdown last year.

In level 2, the cap on numbers is 50, while for level 1 the figure 100.

Every part of Scotland is in level 2 or below and Sturgeon today announced a three week delay in any part of the country moving down a tier.

However, at the same time she announced some “minor” but “important” changes to the rules on weddings and funerals.

Under the changes, suppliers of wedding services will not count towards the cap.

People accompanying the couple down the aisle will no longer be required to wear face coverings.

While live entertainment at receptions will be allowed, people will still need to be seated at tables.

For funerals, the guidance will be changed so that people from more than one household will be able to help carry a coffin and take a cord when lowering it.

Sturgeon said the restrictions would remain in place until 19 July when it is expected that limits for household gatherings indoors will increase from that date, and up to 200 people will be able to attend weddings and funerals.

She said: "We expect these changes to have a relatively minor impact on transmission - they are relatively minor changes. But I hope they will make some difference to those organizing and attending weddings and funerals, ahead of the more substantial changes at level 0."
