Nicola Sturgeon announces level three lockdown for Glasgow to start on Friday

Level four lockdown will end in Glasgow on Friday.

Nicola Sturgeon has just announced the city will shift to tier three, allowing all shops, restaurants and cafes to reopen.

Hairdressers and gyms are also among the businesses permitted to start trading again, weeks after the Scottish Government imposed the strictest level of lockdown on 11 local authority areas in Scotland - including Glasgow City.

The First Minister told the Scottish Parliament today that level four will be lifted in all areas at 6pm on Friday, with the exception of shops that can open at 6am on the same day.

Ten council areas will move into tier three along with Glasgow.

These include neighbouring North and South Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire and East and West Dumbartonshire.

She said: "In reaching decisions today, we have had to consider the potential overall impact of moving to a lower level of restrictions at the same time as the Christmas period begins in earnest.

"That has led us to a proportionate, but still cautious set of conclusions."

Ms Sturgeon also told MSPs there were 692 confirmed new cases overnight in Scotland, and sadly reported a further 33 deaths.

However, she pointed out that infection rates are falling across the country as a result of the tough measures taken over the last few weeks.

But she cautioned: "As we know from our experience of covid so far, progress can very easily go into reverse.

"So please continue to abide by the rules. That means, in particular, not visiting other people's houses."

The news comes as the first Covid-19 vaccines in the world were administered across the UK.

Just this morning Ms Sturgeon admitted having "a lump in her throat" as she watched 90-year-old Margaret Keenan from England receiving the first vaccine on Sky News.

Hours later jabs were given to frontline vaccination staff in Scotland as they prepared to start dishing them out to the public.
