Nicola Sturgeon announces Lanarkshire pubs will close for new lockdown

Lanarkshire pubs and bars are being ordered to close from Friday at 6pm, the First Minister has announced today.

As part of the new tough lockdown rules revealed by Nicola Sturgeon this afternoon, restaurants also won’t be able to sell alcohol.

Boozers – indoors and outdoors – will be forced to close their doors for 16 days until Sunday, October 25.

Ms Sturgeon announced the rules will be in place for central belt health board regions – Ayrshire and Arran, Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Lanarkshire, Lothian and Forth Valley.

The Scottish Government announced the new measures as cases across Scotland soared to record levels in the past 24 hours.

The First Minister also told Lanarkshire residents to avoid public transport unless necessary and to avoid travelling outwith their health board area.

Pubs and restaurants elsewhere in Scotland can stay open but must close by 6pm.

Cafes and restaurants without an alcohol license will be allowed to stay open until 6pm across the country.

Unlicensed cafes and restaurants will be able to stay open but must close at 6pm each day.

Shops, schools, colleges and universities will remain open as normal.

People in the central belt have also been asked to avoid public transport unless absolutely necessary in the next two weeks.

Sturgeon said those in the five health board areas should only use public transport when travelling to work, school or other unavoidable reasons.
