Nicola Sturgeon announces Glasgow to stay in level 3 lockdown over covid case spike

Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed Glasgow will be kept in level 3 lockdown in a bid to deal with a rise in covid cases.

The city stayed in the third tier last week over an increase in infections while most of Scotland went down a level.

At a media briefing, Sturgeon confirmed Level 3 will remain in place in Glasgow for another week at this stage.

She said "extensive" public health measures had been deployed and that cases are still rising.

Sturgeon said she was "fairly certain" the increases were being driven by the so-called Indian variant, which she said was believed to be even more transmissible than the Kent variant.

She added that Glasgow city had not yet turned the corner, but insisted she was "confident" the public health measures would be effective

Level 3 means pubs and restaurants cannot serve alcohol indoors and the ban on visiting other people’s households remains in place.

Moray is another area that was kept in level 3, but it will go down to level 2. Sturgeon said there had been "very significant" improvements.

In a press release issued later, the First Minister said: “Extensive public health measures have been deployed in Glasgow city, including enhanced testing and vaccination in the areas with the highest rates of COVID – especially the G41 and G42 postcodes – and enhanced contact tracing has been put in place.

"Despite all of the efforts that have been made in the last 10 days, however, cases in Glasgow are still rising and we are fairly certain the increase is being driven by the April-02 variant. We are confident that the major public health efforts which are underway will be effective – and that they will bring levels of the virus back under control - but they need a bit longer to do that.

"We also need a bit more time to be more confident that vaccination will stop rising case numbers today becoming sharply rising hospital and severe illness numbers a couple of weeks from now.

“I know how unwelcome Glasgow remaining in Level 3 is for individuals and businesses, but I genuinely hope it will not be for too much longer, and all of us who do live in Glasgow can play our part in getting this under control as soon as possible."

Glasgow Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive Stuart Patrick said:

“Again we have the announcement that Glasgow is to remain on Level 3 with little or no notice, and no hint given of when that might change. This follows on from last weekend when hospitality businesses were left facing hefty financial losses in staff and perishable food costs.

“The city is in a unique position given the size of the surrounding metropolitan region. Non-essential retail businesses, while allowed to open, are losing two-thirds of their catchment while customers are not allowed to travel into the city centre from surrounding Level 2 areas.

“This cannot be allowed to continue. Going forward we need longer notice of changes, enough to give businesses the chance to make appropriate logistical decisions. We also need much more targeted and appropriate levels of financial support for those businesses negatively impacted by rule changes.
