Nicola Sturgeon announces four new deaths in Scotland amid 775 coronavirus cases

Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed four more people have died from coronavirus in Scotland in the past 24 hours.

There were 775 new coronavirus cases recorded overnight, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 30,687 since the pandemic began.

The new deaths from a positive case means the toll stands at 2,526.

The First Minister, speaking from her daily briefing in Edinburgh, said 175 people are currently being treated in hospital with 19 in intensive care.

Of the new cases; 324 are in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde, 164 in Lothians, 102 in Lanarkshire with the rest spread across other health boards.

Yesterday Sturgeon revealed 688 new cases had been confirmed overnight, with seven more people tragically losing their lives having tested positive.

The latest figures comes after Sturgeon called on SNP MP Margaret Ferrier to quit after she admitted travelling back to Scotland after testing positive for Covid-19.

Ferrier, the MP for  Rutherglen  and Hamilton West, shocked the public yesterday by releasing a statement admitting she had breached covid rules.

She travelled to London on Monday despite having taking a test and, after getting a positive result, travelled back to Scotland on the train on Tuesday.

Sturgeon tweeted: “I’ve spoken to Margaret Ferrier and made clear my view that she should step down as an MP.

“I did so with a heavy heart - she is a friend & colleague - but her actions were dangerous & indefensible. I have no power to force an MP to resign but I hope she will do the right thing.”
