Nicola Sturgeon announces four coronavirus deaths amid 752 new cases in Scotland

A further four coronavirus deaths have been recorded in Scotland over the last 24 hours.

The First Minister also announced that 752 new cases of COVID-19 were reported overnight, taking the total figure to 172,953.

2,016 people are in hospital being treated for the deadly virus while 151 people remain in intensive care.

The news came on the day The Record revealed that serious concerns have been raised about the cleanliness of a Skye nursing home that is already being investigated by a special Crown Office unit set up to probe Covid-linked deaths.

Strathburn Care Home on Portree was taken over by NHS Highland in November following the deaths of 10 residents after a coronavirus outbreak.

Formerly known as Home Farm and operated by the private HC-One, the NHS takeover came after an inspection on May 11 raised “serious concerns” about the care residents were receiving.

But following further inspections on December 23 and January 6 and 7, inspectors still found “serious concerns about the cleanliness of the environment”.

They found the building was in a “poor state of repair, which made cleaning difficult and increased the potential for infection”.

The leadership at the home was described as “weak”.

A NHS Highland spokesman said: “"We have quickly responded to this and rectified some areas where that was possible, as well as planning for the wider improvement work required over the coming months.”
