Nicola Sturgeon announces covid vaccine passport app for international travel

Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed her Government will launch a vaccine passport app for international travel next month.

The First Minister said an app providing access to details like vaccination status would be available soon.

She also said she is considering a more limited system for access to “higher risk venues”.

Sturgeon’s Government has been cautious on vaccine passports, which have been criticised on the grounds of civil liberties.

However, supporters believe proof of being double jagged could open up foreign travel and even nudge people who are hesitant into taking the vaccine.

At Holyrood, Sturgeon said: “We continue to consider very carefully the possible, albeit limited, use of Covid status certification for access to certain higher risk venues in future."

She added: “We are currently developing an app to make access to Covid status certificates – which will include vaccination details - easier for international travel. This will be launched next month.

“The app will have functionality to support the use of such certificates for domestic settings should we decide that this is appropriate.”

She also said the Government does not underestimate the “ethical, equity and human rights” issues associated with Covid status certification.
