Nicola Sturgeon has announced more than half of Scotland’s population is now fully vaccinated against coronavirus.
Speaking at the Scottish Government’s coronavirus briefing, the First Minister said: “Today’s vaccine numbers actually take us across quite a significant milestone.
“More than 60% of those eligible for the vaccine have now had both doses, but as of today, more than 50% of the entire population is now fully vaccinated.
“That is an important milestone and one that will be increasing our levels of protection against this virus."
Sturgeon last month announced that she hoped Scotland would move to level zero on July 19th - near normality.
The country’s “freedom day”, where remaining restrictions such as social distancing requirements are scrapped, would take place on August 9th under this timetable.
However since then her announcement covid infection levels have surged to unprecedented levels due to the Delta variant.
At her briefing today, Sturgeon stressed the importance of Scots taking up their vaccine appointment.
