Nicola Sturgeon announces 92 new coronavirus deaths and 1,656 cases in Scotland

Nicola Sturgeon has announced a further 92 coronavirus deaths in Scotland in the last 24 hours.

The First Minister revealed that 1,656 new cases of coronavirus were reported overnight, taking the total number to 166,583.

The latest deaths bring the total toll to 5,468.

Hospitals are currently treating 2,003 people with the virus with 156 in intensive care.

A total of 309,909 people have now received the coronavirus vaccine in Scotland.

It comes as education secretary John Swinney revealed schools could reopen to youngest pupils first under plans being considered by the Scottish Government.

Plans are being drawn up for classes to resume next month on a phased return basis - but only if the spread of coronavirus across the country had fallen enough to allow it.

Children in early years learning and P1 and P2 could be considered for the first phase, as clinical research suggests they are very unlikely to transmit covid.
