Nicola Sturgeon announces 79 new coronavirus deaths and 1,949 cases in Scotland

Nicola Sturgeon announced a further 79 coronavirus deaths have been recorded in Scotland over the last 24 hours.

The First Minister also confirmed 1,949 new cases of COVID-19 were reported overnight, taking the total figure to 155,372.

1,794 people are in hospital being treated for the deadly virus, up 77 overnight, while 134 people remain in intensive care.

191, 965 people have been vaccinated in Scotland.

The news came on the day Aldi and Waitrose became the latest supermarkets to enforce masks in stores in a nationwide crackdown on rule-breakers.

The retail giants have joined Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Asda to ban shoppers who refuse to wear a face covering in a bid to curb the virus.

German discounter Aldi has warned customers who don't follow the new covid rules will be turned away at the door from today.

Customers are also being urged to shop alone to reduce the number of people in store.

Aldi bosses said: "For a limited period, customers that forget to bring a mask will be provided with one, free of charge.

"Anyone without a medical exemption that refuses to wear a mask is not permitted to enter stores."

Waitrose has said staff will stop customers from shopping who refuse to wear a mask in stores, unless medically exempt.
