Nicola Sturgeon announces 54 new coronavirus deaths in Scotland amid 1,264 cases

The death toll from coronavirus in Scotland has risen by 54, the Scottish Government have confirmed.

Nicola Sturgeon announced the total number of deaths from the deadly virus now stands at 3,377.

It comes as a further 1,264 people have tested positive for the virus in the last 24 hours meaning the total number of cases stands at 84,523.

There are currently 1,241 people in hospital, while 88 patients remain in intensive care.

The figures were announced by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon during the daily coronavirus briefing.

It comes after it was confirmed that 11 Scottish local authority areas will move into Tier 4, the strictest level of restrictions on Friday.

The tough new rules will also include travel restrictions with those in Tier 3 and Tier 4 areas told to remain in their council area.

The Scottish Government insist schools will remain open in Tier 4 areas despite widespread calls for their closure.
