Nicola Sturgeon announces 49 new coronavirus deaths in Scotland amid 773 cases

Nicola Sturgeon has announced that 49 Scots have died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

The First Minister confirmed that a further 773 positive cases have been detected overnight, taking the total to 193,148.

The Scottish death toll now stands at 6,764 since the start of the pandemic.

A total of 1,383 are currently being treated in hospital for the deadly virus with 100 in intensive care.

It comes as Nicola Sturgeon is expected to deliver a statement on lockdown today with Scots hoping to be given an idea of when restrictions can be eased.

Scotland has endured seven gruelling weeks of lockdown since Christmas with non-essential shops shut, almost all hospitality businesses closed and a ban on travelling outwith local council areas.

The First Minister is expected to say that schools can begin reopening to the youngest primary pupils from next week, with limited numbers of senior high school students also allowed to return to class.

But Scots will be hoping she can also provide some detail on when the toughest lockdown restrictions can expect to be eased.

Yesterday was the first day that international travellers arriving in Scotland must quarantine for 10 days in designated hotels.

Passengers entering the country must book and pay £1750 for managed isolation at one of six agreed hotels in advance of their arrival.

Food and beverages will be supplied by staff during the 10 day period.

All arrivals must also take two coronavirus tests on days two and eight of their hotel stay.
