Nicola Sturgeon announces 43 coronavirus deaths and 1,316 new cases in Scotland

A further 43 coronavirus deaths have been recorded in Scotland over the last 24 hours.

The Scottish Government also announced that 1,316 new cases of COVID-19 were reported overnight, taking the total figure to 114,366.

1,045 people are in hospital being treated for the deadly virus while 60 people remain in intensive care.

The news came on the day Scotland's final lockdown review of the year will be confirmed today as fears increase about the impact of a rapidly spreading strain of coronavirus.

Nicola Sturgeon will announce any potential last-minute restrictions just days before the mainland is plunged back to the highest level 4 alert.

The review is seen as a last chance to address any surging infection figures before the Boxing Day shut down.

But with most of the country already in level 3, public health officials are keeping an eye on more rural areas, particularly in the south.

Experts are also trying to get on top of any spread of the new variant of Covid-19 which is ripping through south east England.

Only 18 cases were officially identified in Scotland by Monday but the number is thought to be significant underestimate.
