Nicola Sturgeon announces 161 new coronavirus cases in Scotland as no deaths recorded

Nicola Sturgeon has announced that 161 people have tested positive for  coronavirus  in Scotland in the last 24 hours.

The First Minister revealed that no one has died across the country in the same period, keeping the death toll at 2,499.

The total number of positive cases across Scotland now sits at 22,039 since the start of the pandemic in late March.

The number of patients with coronavirus being treated in hospital stands at 266 - with seven in intensive care.

It comes as Scotland's contact tracing app goes live across the country.

The government said Protect Scotland will support the Test and Protect system and is "another tool in the fight against Covid-19".

The app can be downloaded free from the Apple App Store or Google Play.

Nicola Sturgeon  is to consider introducing further restrictions on social gatherings in Scotland in an effort to halt the surge in  coronavirus  cases, particularly amongst the young.

The First Minister will announce later on Thursday if Scotland will follow a move by  Boris Johnson  as she urges people to download the new NHS Scotland contact tracing app for mobile phones.

The Scottish Government has taken a more cautious approach to easing lockdown so it is unlikely the First Minister will lift any existing restrictions - and she could impose more.

Sturgeon had already warned her latest review was "likely to take a very cautious approach".
