Nicola Sturgeon announces 15 new coronavirus deaths as 1,456 cases recorded in Scotland

There were 15 new coronavirus deaths overnight in Scotland, the Scottish Government has announced.

A further 1,456 Scots have also tested positive for the deadly virus as cases continue to rise across the country.

Since the start of the pandemic a total of 49,164 people have tested positive for the deadly virus.

Some 824 patients are currently being treated in hospital while 69 remain in intensive care.

Of the positive cases 500 were in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, 393 in Lanarkshire, 198 in Lothian and 116 in Ayrshire and Arran. The rest are split between the other health boards in Scotland.

Nicola Sturgeon unveiled the latest figures at her daily briefing from St Andrew's House in Edinburgh.

Tuesday’s update comes as it was revealed a coronavirus vaccine is "unlikely" to wipe out the deadly bug, a UK science chief has admitted.

However, Sir Patrick Vallance said that in years to come an effective vaccine should mean that Covid-19 could be viewed more like seasonal flu.

He made the comments as he was giving evidence to the joint Commons and Lords National Security Strategy Committee.

Sir Patrick - the UK Government's chief scientific adviser - reminded the committee that the only disease to have been completely wiped out was smallpox.

On Monday, Nicola Sturgeon warned that schools could close if the spread of coronavirus continues to ramp up across the country.

She warned that school closures and blended learning - where children spend only half the week in school - were being considered as part of the three tier approach to tackle the virus.
