Nicola Sturgeon announces 146 new coronavirus cases in Scotland and no new deaths

There have been 146 new people tested positive for coronavirus in Scotland over the last 24 hours.

The Scottish Government confirmed that the total number of confirmed cases now sits at 21,543 since the start of the outbreak.

256 people are currently being treated in hospital for the bug while five are in intensive care.

No new deaths have been recorded meaning the current hospital death toll remains at 2,496.

The largest spike saw the Greater Glasgow and Clyde area suffer an increase of 78 cases.

There were also 13 cases in Lothian, six in Ayrshire and Arran, one in Lanarkshire, and six other cases spread across other health board areas.

Meanwhile, a leading scientist has warned that the killer bug may have an impact on our lives for another three years.

German virologist Professor Hendrik Streeck said that there are no guarantees around the success of a vaccine and that Scots must be prepared to alter their everyday lives.

It comes after he led a study on how the virus spreads between households and worries that Covid-19 will continue to have an impact until at least 2023.

A ban on visiting other households was reintroduced in Glasgow, East Renfrewshire and  West Dunbartonshire  this week, following an increase in cases linked to indoor gatherings at residential properties.
