Nicola Sturgeon announces 12 coronavirus deaths and 625 cases overnight

Nicola Sturgeon has announced 12 coronavirus deaths and 625 new cases in last 24 hours

The First Minister released the figures from St Andrews House in Nicola Sturgeon.

12 more Scots have tragically died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

A total of 422 people are being treated in hospital for the virus with 38 in intensive care.

625 new cases have been identified overnight across the country.

Since the start of the pandemic, 7,529 people have lost their lives to coronavirus in Scotland while 211,230 have tested positive.

The news came on the day The Daily Record reported that one Scots university's antibody test is more accurate than any currently available.

Aberdeen University, in collaboration with Vertebrate Antibodies and NHS Grampian, has developed a test that has shown high levels of accuracy in smaller trials.

Current tests can often be unsuitable for rapid mass deployment as they can be inaccurate and also detect other viruses including some versions of the common cold.

However, this new test if approve could be used for widespread screening of NHS staff and high-risk patients.

It would also provide data on the prevalence of emerging mutant Covid-19 strains, herd immunity and the efficacy of the vaccination programme.
