Nicola Sturgeon announces 1 new coronavirus death and 1,782 cases in Scotland

A further one coronavirus death has been recorded in Scotland over the last 24 hours.

Nicola Sturgeon also announced that 1,782 new cases of COVID-19 were reported overnight, taking the total figure to 151,548.

1,664 people are in hospital being treated for the deadly virus - this figure is higher than the peak in April - while 126 people remain in intensive care.

Of the latest cases 595 are in Greater Glasgow and Clyde health board, 307 in Lanarkshire, 194 in Lothian and 144 in Ayrshire and Arran.

The news came on the day Scotland’s supermarkets were warned to toughen restrictions on rule breakers in a bid to stop coronavirus infections.

Queuing, social distancing and one-way aisles are among the rules introduced during the pandemic - but they are not enforced by law.

Supermarket giants are now being urged to get strict on restrictions due to stores being one of the easiest ways to catch the virus as different households mix under one roof.

It comes as NHS Test and Trace data in November revealed supermarkets were the most common place to catch coronavirus.
