Nicola Sturgeon and Labour leadership contender Jess Phillips clash over indyref2

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has clashed with a Labour leadership contender over her opposition to indyref2 .

Responding to Jess Phillips jibe about nationalism, Sturgeon said the threat to Scotland internationalism was being dragged out of the EU.

A second independence referendum is becoming an important issue in the race to succeed Jeremy Corbyn, with all the candidates offering their view.

Lisa Nandy has described herself as a Unionist, left-winger Rebecca Long-Bailey criticised Labour alliance with the Tories in Better Together in 2014, and Keir Starmer has also said he supports the Union.

Phillips, a Corbyn critic, has been the candidate most hostile to indyref2.

In a tweet, she wrote: "I read somewhere that by the strength of our common endeavour we achieve more than we achieve alone.

"Let nationalists make the case for nationalism, we should make the argument for solidarity and internationalism."

Sturgeon hit back: “It’s not independence that’s threatening Scotland’s internationalism - it’s not being independent and therefore dragged out of the EU against our will that’s doing it.”

Phillips, who will visit Scotland tomorrow as part of her campaign, responded: "The idea that the answer to the UK leaving a union with our most important trading partner is for Scotland to leave a union with her most important trading partner only makes sense if you’re a nationalist.

“Nicola Sturgeon wants to talk to me about threats to Scotland.

“The SNP’s abject failings on education and health show that it is her administration that remains a threat to opportunity and equality for working people in Scotland."
