Nicola Sturgeon among guests celebrating relaunch of south side curry 19 months after fire

A popular Indian restaurant destroyed in a huge fire in November 2017 has reopened for business.

Nicola Sturgeon, Hollywood film writer Mark Millar and Outlander star Scott Kyle were among 200 guests at the re-opening party of the popular south side curry house.

Kebabish Grill, on Victoria Road, will open to the public on Monday after it was gutted in a massive blaze which broke out in their kitchen one afternoon during service.

Three were taken to hospital as fire crews battled the flames and rescued tenants from the burning building – as dramatic images showed black smoke billowing from the block into the sky.

The restaurant was busy at the time of the accident, in mid-afternoon on November 30, 2017.

Eight flats in the four-storey tenement block above were also damaged, some seriously.

Eight families were evacuated and were initially provided with emergency accommodation in the nearby Govanhill Baths.

Last night Nicola Sturgeon met the families, who were also in attendance at the pre-opening celebration.

Owner Bilal Sheikh said: “It has been a long hard road for everyone concerned. We’ve lost 18 months of trading and eight families were forced out of their homes by this tragic accident.

“We’re relieved this terrible ordeal will soon be over and look forward to getting back to normal."
