Nicola Sturgeon advisor Devi Sridhar says 'international vaccine passports are going to happen'

A top coronavirus adviser to Nicola Sturgeon has said that international vaccine passports will be implemented in the future.

Leading professor Devi Sridhar addressed speculation that vaccine passports will be implemented in order to travel abroad, with Professor Sridhar confirming that "this is the direction" that the issue will take. However, she also expressed inequality concerns over the measures.

In a tweet, Professor Sridhar said: "This is the direction of travel. International vaccine passports are going to happen. Major inequality issues involved though."

It comes after the First Minister's advisor spoke out after it was confirmed that six cases of the coronavirus strain had been identified across the UK. Three of the cases are in Scotland.

On their route home, the individuals flew from Brazil to Paris and then from Paris to London, meaning they avoided the "red list" of countries put in place by Boris Johnson.

Professor Sridhar slammed the system that allowed the loophole to happen.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain earlier today, she said: "I find it astonishing. We’re in a pretty strong lockdown, businesses shut, schools shut. Yet people can fly in to the country from wherever, including from Brazil - a red list country - through Paris. And in Scotland it came through London and then not have to fill in forms and not be tracked.

"I find that astonishing - we need to have better procedures. It doesn’t mean closing off the country, it means having testing, sequencing, quarantine and tracking procedures so we actually are on top of this problem."
