Nicola Adams clarifies she is lesbian after reports claiming she is bisexual

Nicola Adams has told fans she is a lesbian, after conflicting reports about her sexuality.

The 37-year-old, who will make history when she becomes the first Strictly Come Dancing contestant to dance as part of a same-sex pairing, made the announcement on Twitter following reports stating she is bisexual.

Olympic boxer Adams told her 92,000 followers: “I’m lesbian not bi, just saying,” adding a LGBTQ+ flag emoji.

She accompanied the tweet with a video of herself lip-syncing to Whitey’s rap Gay, which includes the lyrics: “B***h I’m gay, I can’t even think straight.”

The flyweight champion, who won Olympic Gold at the London 2012 Olympics and the 2016 Games in Rio, previously revealed that she came out as bisexual to her family when she was 15.

Speaking about her sexuality in Vogue magazine, Adams said in 2016: “No one's ever really cared about me being bisexual and I only came out because I had always been out, it's just the general public didn't know.

“I'm quite fearless. I'm like, let's just go out there and do this and see what happens.”

Adams is currently in a relationship with beauty blogger Ella Baig, with the pair having previously featured on Celebrity Gogglebox together.

The star is one of 12 famous faces to be taking to the socially-distanced dance floor for Strictly’s upcoming 18th series.

Radio DJ Clara Amfo, former Home Secretary Jacqui Smith and comedy legend Caroline Quentin are among some of the big names that have signed up for this year’s series, which has been reduced to nine episodes instead of the usual 12.

Speaking about landing a place on the BBC One’s flagship show, Adams said: “I’m super excited to be taking part on Strictly Come Dancing this year.

“I’d like to thank the BBC for giving me the opportunity for being the first female lead on the show. I’ll be giving it my all, just like I do in the boxing ring.

“Let’s get ready to rumble!”
