Nicky Byrne, Georgina Ahern and children evacuated during family holiday in Portugal

Nicky Byrne, Georgina Ahern and their children were evacuated while on holiday in Portugal.

The Westlife star and his family were among a number of tourists and locals who were taken to safety as wildfires ravaged parts of the Iberian Peninsula this week.

Wildfires in the area have been caused by extreme temperatures of more than 45C.

Nicky, his wife Georgina, their twin sons Jay and Rocco, and daughter Gia are staying in the exclusive Quinta da Lago resort in The Algarve.

"The singer was on a family holiday with wife Georgina, sister-in-law Cecelia and father-in-law Bertie Ahern," reports the Mail on Sunday.

"A source spotted Nicky enjoying a few drinks with former Taoiseach Bertie in a local bar.

"But their pints and conversion were cut short as the pub was evacuated due to the fires which were worsening."

Quinta do Lago is a gated community and golf resort in Almancil in southern Portugal, RSVP reports.

Nicky and his family are said to holiday there with their extended family every summer.

It is also a hit with other Irish celebrities as Suzanne Jackson was pictured there this week as were Pippa O'Connor and her husband Brian Ormond and their three kids; Ollie, Louis and Billy. Brian Dowling and his husband Arthur Gourounlian are also on holiday there at the moment.

The Quinta Do Lago resort is owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien.

A statement confirming an evacuation of some residents and guests due to the fire was released earlier in the week.

It said: “Following the fire situation in Quinta do Lago, the management of the Quinta do Lago Group would like to reassure all its residents that it is closely monitoring the situation with the competent authorities that are acting onsite.

“Some of the most critical areas close to the fire have been evacuated, as a precaution. We have also decided to close our golf courses, sports facilities and our outlets to ensure the wellbeing of our residents and guests.

“We would also like to appeal to the entire community to remain calm, keep updated as local authorities are working hard on the ground. Keep safe.”

More than 30 fires were active in Portugal on Friday morning with temperatures over 40C.

Elsewhere in Ireland, temperatures are expected to reach 32C today and a weather warning is in place.
