Nicky Butt is to leave his role at Manchester United after nine years back at Old Trafford.

Butt confirmed on Wednesday that he was seeking a “new professional challenge” after serving as head of first-team development since 2019 and also previously working as Under-19s and reserves coach as well as head of academy.

The former England midfielder made 387 appearances as a player for United, winning a plethora of major silverware under Sir Alex Ferguson including six Premier League titles, the Champions League and three FA Cups.

‘Class of 92’ member Butt - who also sat on the first-team bench recently when some of United’s coaching staff were forced to self-isolate - was part of the Red Devils squad that famously sealed an iconic Treble in 1999.

The 46-year-old said it had been a “privilege” to help a “a new generation of talent” make that same journey from the United academy to first team.

“I’m proud of the role everyone on the staff plays in giving our young footballers the best possible chance of fulfilling their potential, and the results are clear to see in the increased number of homegrown players reaching the first team,” he said.

"I already know from my playing days how difficult it is to leave Manchester United, but it feels like the right moment for a new professional challenge and I look forward to exploring opportunities that build on the great experiences I’ve had here over the past nine years.”

Butt reported directly to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during his time as head of first-team development.

Of his old team-mate’s exit, the Norwegian said: “Nicky will always be a legend of Manchester United as a six-time Premier League winner and, of course, an integral part of our Treble-winning team.

“That pedigree has made him a great source of guidance and inspiration to our academy players since he returned to the club.

“We are all going to miss him around the Aon Training Complex but Nicky knows he will always be welcome back.”
