Nicklas Bendtner has hit back at media criticism after he missed a fan event at Wolfsburg claiming to have a sore throat.
The striker, who was dropped last month for being late for training and has started just five Bundesliga games in the 10 months since he signed, was the only player to miss the event on Sunday – provoking widespread criticism in the German media.
The Danish paper BT reported that the former Arsenal forward is now “finished” at the club, had left officials “shaking their heads”, and linked him with a move to FC Copenhagen. He has two years left on his Wolfsburg contract.
Bendtner used his Instagram page to respond to the reports, writing: “First: I would NEVER disappoint the fans. I am happy to drive around to anyone who would have me. Unfortunately I was sick.
“Second: I am a Wolfsburg player, and proud to be so. Its been a great season and its been amazing to be a part of. Anyone who wants to write shit about me, and try to put me down, go ahead. This tiger will fight till the end.”
The chairman of the supervisory board at Wolfsburg, Francisco Javier García Sanz, said: “He is what he is – and we knew that when we signed him. We have to weigh up how we take it forward and that is something the football people will look at. After the cup final we will sit down and plan for next season.”
