Nov. 12--A failed drug test at the 2014 Sochi Olympics continues to shadow Nicklas Backstrom some nine months later.
The Swedish hockey player thought he was at least partially exonerated by the International Olympic Committee, but the Hockey News has reported that anti-doping officials will appeal that decision before an international sports court.
"I mean, I thought it was over but I guess it's not," Backstrom told CSNWashington.com. "I don't really think about it. We'll see."
The trouble began during Sweden's march toward a silver medal in Sochi, when the team doctor allegedly advised Backstrom -- who also plays for the Washington Capitals in the NHL -- that it would be all right to take Zyrtec-D to treat his allergies.
The pseudoephedrine in those pills showed up on a drug test and Backstrom was suspended for the championship game against Canada. Without him, Sweden lost, 3-0.
A subsequent IOC investigation found no indication that Backstrom was trying to improperly boost his performance. Officials cited his honesty and cooperation in deciding that his championship-game suspension was justified but that he should receive a silver medal.
Now, the World Anti-Doping Agency is seeking seek to have that decision overturned, arguing its case before the Court of Arbitration for Sport. No hearing date has been set.
