Nicki Minaj has clarified comments she made about Kanye West’s "Gold Digger" lyrics, explaining she was not criticising him.
The 33-year-old rapper and business mogul grabbed headlines when she drew attention to the lyrics of West’s 2005 hit single "Gold Digger", which suggest black men are more likely to marry a “white girl” after they become successful. Minaj then drew attention to the fact he is now married to Kim Kardashian.
But Minaj has now insisted she was highlighting how he was the first to make the make the assertion. She also commended him for expressing the truths people do not want to hear.
In the initial remarks Minaj told Marie Claire: “I’m so tired of black women feeling that when our men get rich, they're going to leave them for a woman of a different race”.
“It wasn't funny when Kanye said [in his 2005 hit 'Gold Digger'], 'When he get on, he'll leave your a*** for a white girl' - and Kanye happens to be with a white girl now. It wasn't funny when he said it; it was the f***ing truth.”
Minaj has now clarified her position on Twitter. “I was saying he's the one who said it first. He doesn't apologise for his choices. He tells the truth about stuff people don't wanna hear!” she wrote.
In the original interview, Minaj, who was announced as one of Time magazine’s 1000 most influential people of 2016, condemned the double standard that black women face when it comes to nudity. She argued it was viewed as more socially acceptable for white women to post nude selfies than women of colour.
