Nick Winser keeps the meter running

Why have energy costs gone up so much in the last couple of years? Maybe it’s the stonking high pay of all the people running the industry.

A new energy regulator called the Future System Operator is in the process of being set up, and Spy hears from whispers that industry bigwig Nick Winser, right, is due to be announced imminently as its chair.

Winser is already a wealthy man, estimated to have earned over £11 million during his period as European CEO of National Grid from 2003 to 2015 and leaving with more than £4 million worth of shares.

If it's his mission to extract every last penny he can get from the energy sector, it's not over yet. In his new role the government is giving him a salary of £138k — not bad for a part-time job.
