Nick Sirianni on why he hired Jonathan Gannon as Eagles defensive coordinator

On Friday, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni spoke with the media for the first time since being hired. One of his first moves was bringing in Colts defensive backs coach Jonathan Gannon to be the defensive coordinator.

I think his football IQ is off the charts,” Sirianni said. “For the last three years when I wanted to know something about a defense he’s the first one I went to. His players play well for him and his energy is contagious.”

Gannon has helped produce four top-10 defenses in seven seasons, while last season, the Eagles finished 19th in the NFL allowing an average of 363.1 yards per game.

While he was in Minnesota, Gannon worked with three-time Pro Bowl cornerback Xavier Rhodes, who was released by the Vikings after the 2019 season.

Rhodes signed with the Colts, where he was reunited with Gannon and had a bounce-back season this past year.

Sirianni and Gannon coached together on the Colts for the past three seasons and they’ll look to bring their success from Indianapolis to Philadelphia.
