Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from the French Open, just days after saying the clay-court tournament ‘sucks’ in comparison to Wimbledon.
The 24-year-old’s withdrawal is believed to be through illness, and comes a week after he was fined for an angry outburst on court at the Italian Open, but escaped suspension, clearing him to play in Paris.
After being disqualified from that tournament, Kyrgios travelled to London to practice alongside Andy Murray at Wimbledon, and wrote on Instagram: "I think this is the best tournament in the world, look at this perfect green surface.
"Get rid of the clay, man. Who likes the clay, it is so bad.
"The French Open sucks compared to this place. Sucks. Absolute sucks."
Kyrgios, who was due to face Great Britain’s Cameron Norrie in the first round, has never been beyond the third round at Roland Garros, and was also a late withdrawal from last year’s tournament because of an elbow injury.
