Nick Kyrgios has sparked controversy again after swearing and being issued with a code violation for hitting a ball into the roof during his exit from the Japan Open.

The 20-year-old lost 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 to France’s Benoit Paire in the quarter-finals, but refused to go down quietly with TV commentators apologising to viewers when one of his four-letter outbursts was picked up by on-court microphones.

He was handed a code violation when he hit the ball into the indoor stadium’s roof after being broken in the third set. He was never in the match after that with the set taking just 23 minutes.

Kyrgios had been keeping a low profile since the controversy surrounding his comments to Stan Wawrinka during the Montreal Masters in August.
