Nick Hammond leaves Celtic as head of football operations quits to 'pursue new opportunities'

Head of football operations Nick Hammond has left Celtic as the 9 in a row winners’ overhaul continues.

The Premiership side announced on Wednesday the former Reading and West Brom chief's departure after 17 months in the role.

Celtic are expected to appoint a director of football before next season, as well as a new manager.

A statement from Parkhead revealed Hammond, who took a lead role in the club's recruitment in recent transfer windows, is moving on to "pursue new opportunities".

"Celtic Football Club today announced that head of football operations, Nick Hammond, has resigned from his position at the club to pursue new opportunities.

"Nick joined Celtic in 2019, having previously held director of football and technical director positions at Reading FC and West Bromwich Albion FC respectively. He leaves with the club’s best wishes."

Celtic CEO Peter Lawwell added: “We would like to thank Nick for his contribution to Celtic across the past two seasons. Everyone at the Club wishes Nick the very best for the future."

Hammond has had a mixed track record at Celtic, with him being the subject of criticism over signings such as £5million Vasilis Barkas.

He also helped bring in the likes of Albian Ajeti and Shane Duffy, both of whom have failed to impress. He did, however, play a role in signing David Turnbull.

It is believed a director of football will arrive at the Glasgow giants, with Dominic McKay replacing Peter Lawwell as chief exec and a permanent replacement for Neil Lennon.

Eddie Howe, Enzo Maresca and Roy Keane are among the favourites to take the role.
