MINNEAPOLIS _ Trick plays involving each quarterback became the story line in the first half Sunday night, and history was made by Nick Foles in the Eagles' 41-33 win over the Patriots in Super Bowl LII.
Foles, the Eagles' backup quarterback for most of the season before starter Carson Wentz was injured, became the first quarterback in Super Bowl history to catch a touchdown pass.
Ahead 15-12, the Eagles faced a fourth-and-goal from the Patriots' 1 with 38 seconds left. Foles lined up behind the right tackle as running back Corey Clement was in the pistol.
After the snap, Foles waited for a few seconds, then headed toward the end zone as Clement gave the ball to tight end Trey Burton. Foles was wide open as Burton floated a pass to him for the touchdown. It was Foles' first career touchdown reception and pushed the Eagles' lead to 22-12.
There was some question whether it was a legal formation because it appeared the Eagles had six men on the line of scrimmage.
Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, on the other hand, had a potential first-down pass go off his fingertips.
Faced with a third-and-5 from the Eagles' 35, Brady took the snap and handed off to running back James White, who handed off to wide receiver Danny Amendola as Brady ran down the right sideline alone. Amendola was slightly off balance when he attempted the pass, and although it was slightly overthrown, it was catchable.
On fourth down, Brady threw deep to Rob Gronkowski, but it was incomplete.
The Eagles took over at their 35 and wound up going ahead 15-3 on LeGarrette Blount's 21-yard touchdown run.
Both quarterbacks piled up the yards and points. Brady finished with 505 yards passing, three touchdowns and no interceptions, completing 28 of 48 attempts. Foles passed for 373 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, completing 28 of 43 passes.
