Nicholson Nairn Architects opens new office in Leeds as firm expands

A North East architecture firm is looking to expand its reach after opening a new studio in Yorkshire.

Nicholson Nairn Architecture (NNA) currently employs 13 people at its office in Whickham, in Gateshead, but has now opened a second base in Leeds.

The new branch will be headed up by associate Gary Wilson, who originally trained as an architect at the firm before leaving to work in Leeds and North Yorkshire. Since leaving Nicholson Nairn, he has worked as an associate at CRL Architects and Halliday Clark Architects.

NNA managing director Chris Barr said: “The Yorkshire studio is key to the continued strategic growth of the business and its future plans.

“Gary is an experienced and talented architect with drive and ambition aligned to Nicholson Nairn’s ethos. His excellent local knowledge and reputation are also important in establishing the new studio.

“I have no doubt, that with the support of our existing team, Gary will play a huge part in this exciting new chapter for the practice.”

Nicholson Nairn Architects was founded in 1991 by Tony Nicholson and Garfield Nairn. Mr Barr took charge of the firm following a management buy-in in 2017. The firm merged with fellow North East architecture practice Jonathan Mole Architects in 2018.

The practice works on a variety of diverse projects ranging from home extensions to multi-million pound commercial properties. Its current projects include large care homes, a leisure complex and volume housing developments. It was also involved in the renovation of the Spanish City site in Whitley Bay.

The company has also designed the Big Shots golf centre that is being planned in Wallsend. If approved, the site will include a new driving range, car park, bar and restaurant and a golf retail unit.
