Niche-breaking BMWs to be shown at 2018 Bangkok motor show

Sporty X2 crossover to be joined by 5 Series Touring, go-faster version of M4 Coupe and super-quick M5 saloon.

BMW Thailand will be showing four new niche-breaking models at the upcoming 2018 Bangkok motor show, most of which are without a direct rival from either Audi or Mercedes-Benz.

Heading off the assault is the all-new X2, a sporty compact SUV based on the family-oriented X1.

As the Thai BMW office wants to emphasise the X2’s racy image, it has chosen to highlight the five-door crossover with the brand’s new M Sport X trim featuring coloured exterior add-ons.

The initial engine variance for the Thai market is the sDrive20i coming with 192hp 2.0-litre petrol-turbo, eight-speed automatic and front-wheel drive. It costs 2.999 million baht.

The next model is the 5 Series Touring which aims to draw some attention from punters of the dearer and less powerful Mercedes-Benz E220d Estate AMG Dynamic.

The 530i Touring is dressed up in M Sport spec, comes with 252hp 2.0-litre petrol-turbo and asks for 4.539 million baht. The 194hp diesel-powered E220d Estate goes for 4.74 million baht.

The other two BMWs come from the M high-performance car division. As announced earlier, imports of the M5 have started for the first time.

The 600hp super saloon is equipped with 600hp 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, eight-speed torque-converter automatic and all-wheel drive which can switch to rear-drive upon the request of the driver.

The M5 is priced at 13.339 million baht. Mercedes-Benz has yet to consider imports of the AMG-fettled E63 saloon, while the Audi RS6 is still under development in next-gen form.

After selling the M4 Coupe in both regular 431hp guise and 450hp Competition Pack, another go-faster model is being introduced.

The M4 CS features the same 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six but is tuned to a higher 460hp for a 3.9sec 0-100kph acceleration time. The price is set at 11.399 million baht.
