Niall Quinn to front FAI delegation in meeting with UEFA chiefs in Switzerland

Niall Quinn is to front an FAI delegation that will travel to Switzerland within the week to meet UEFA chiefs.

It will be a further step towards securing the financial assistance required to save the FAI from liquidation, as is now widely expected.

But more so it will be a fact-finding mission for the new-look FAI hierarchy who want to know more about how UEFA money to the FAI was used in the past.

Two weeks ago, European football’s governing body sent a high-powered four-man delegation to Dublin to meet with Government and FAI independent chair Roy Barrett.

Quinn was last week appointed as interim deputy CEO of the FAI and, along with interim chief executive Gary Owens, they met concerned FAI staff today.

Neither attended Saturday’s EGM in Blanchardstown where Gerry McAnaney’s election as president saw an end to the old guard’ - with former president Donal Conway stepping down.

Today, Owens and Quinn spoke to staff - many of whom continue to fear for their jobs in the wake of the FAI’s dire financial predicament - for 25 minutes.

Between 150 and 160 staff were in attendance at the FAI’s Abbotstown headquarters and Owens and Quinn fielded a number of questions from the floor.

The atmosphere was described as "positive and informative" while another attendee said staff would continue to adopt a “wait and see policy” but said it was “worthwhile”.

Efforts to secure the multi-million funding required to save the troubled association continue behind the scenes.

But Minister for Sport Shane Ross looks likely to request that the number of independent members on the 12-person board is increased from four to six at the AGM later this summer.

Meanwhile, the new-look FAI hierarchy of Owens and Quinn are prepared to meet with disgruntled First Division clubs and, separately, the league’s match officials.

Crisis continues to grip the domestic game just four weeks out from the start of the new season.

The First Division Alliance remains furious at the inclusion of Shamrock Rovers II in the second tier this season.

They have discussed everything from boycotting Rovers games, taking legal action and even "a nuclear option" of mass withdrawal of the league.

Match officials also want sit down talks with the new FAI chiefs to air their frustration at under-funding and cost-cutting in their chosen field.

On Friday, it emerged that 23 of the 70 match officials failed their pre-season physical assessments but they will get another shot to pass it within a fortnight.
