Niall Quinn quizzed on Ireland managerial headache following UEFA's Euros postponement

Niall Quinn says the FAI won’t be commenting on Ireland’s managerial headache until after the Euro playoff with Slovakia.

With the European Championships kicked back a year to June 2021, it is unclear whether Mick McCarthy or Stephen Kenny will manage the team beyond this summer.

McCarthy was due to leave the job after the finals with Ireland Under-21 boss Kenny stepping up to take charge from August 1.

And Kenny would have been elevated to the hot-seat in June had Ireland lost to Slovakia this month. But that playoff has been postponed until June and the FAI will have their work cut out to iron out the contract mess if Ireland qualify.

Quinn - the FAI's interim deputy chief executive - was quizzed this evening on the succession plan quirk and said: “I don't think there’s any point trying to do something about that now.

“We're still in a position where we don't know if we're going to the Euros or not.

“We'll know on June 10th and I would have thought that June 10th would be a good time to start worrying or overly worrying about that particular incidence.

“We'll do that at the right time and speak to the stakeholders first. We won't be talking publicly until that time.”

Dublin was due to host four games at the Euros this summer but those games won’t go ahead until 2021.

But the FAI felt it was the right decision that UEFA postponed their flagship tournament for a year.

“I'm very pleased they took the decision to move the Euros,” Quinn told FAI TV.  “It gives everyone breathing space at a really difficult time and unprecedented time.

“It’s one where the health of our players, fans and everyone in the footballing family of Europe is at stake. I would commend them for doing that.”

The hope is the Slovakia clash in Bratislava will now go ahead in June but Quinn knows it could be ambitious.

The former Ireland striker added: “It’s a realistic target to aim for. Will it happen, will the medical world allow it, will the HSE and Government allow fans and players to travel?

“We don't want to put anyone in danger, that's the first thing. But if there is a lift and a possibility of those games going ahead, it augurs well that we have definite dates.”

UEFA has said the playoff games will be played sometime between June 1-9 but not fixed dates have been assigned as of yet.
