Niall Quinn admits FIFA financial help will be crucial to League of Ireland

Niall Quinn admits that FIFA’s financial digout will be crucial for the League of Ireland.

But he says there is an onus on clubs to get creative in how they generate revenue in the wake of Covid-19.

Club bosses are costing up at least five different scenarios for how best to proceed with the rest of the 2020 season.

The FAI are due to receive those findings next week and one recommendation will then be put forward ahead of a key Government announcement on May 5.

The proposals from playing games behind-closed-doors from June 19, to a winter season that runs from September to February.

Some clubs are opposed to behind-closed-doors matches because they will lose valuable match day revenues.

Others feel the league is being held back by the smaller clubs and that the option should at least be explored.

Quinn, the interim deputy FAI chief executive, says the association is “a long way down the line” in developing a streaming plan for League of Ireland games.

"We're trying to be more creative,” he said. For instance we’ve gone a long way down the line looking at a streaming option where all games can be accessed via digital paywall.

"That's technically in a really good position. We’ve looked at a financial audit and found out exactly what would be required from streaming to make it feasible.”

Quinn told Off The Ball: "UEFA and the government have been very good to us so we wouldn't refuse anything.

“But the announcement from FIFA that they were willing to contribute to associations hit hard during the current pandemic, helps.”

FIFA has reserves of over €2 billion and will roll out financial aid packages to all national associations hit by the Covid crisis within the next six weeks.

World football’s governing body is still mapping out how best to distribute the funds, be it through grants or loans.

Quinn added: “We hope to put numbers in place by May 5 as to what revenues would look like from online streaming and also what contributions could be made from FIFA."
