Niall Huggins's Wales exploits are picked up by a Leeds United hero

Kalvin Phillips is not the only Leeds United player making his mark on the international scene this week.

One of the club's most highly-rated prospects, Niall Huggins, was in action for Wales under-21s against the Republic of Ireland yesterday afternoon.

Albeit in a losing cause, the 20-year-old marked his second appearance for the young Dragons with an assist for the opening goal scored by Joe Adams, the Brentford winger who is currently on loan with Grimsby Town.

Close to two years after making his international debut, Huggins played the entire 90 minutes on the right flank in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

It took him just 12 minutes to make a mark too, as former Leeds defender and now agent Ian Harte was among the first to congratulate the club's academy graduate.

In a simple post made on Twitter, the former Irish international, who played upwards of 200 league games for the Whites after progressing through the youth ranks himself, said: "Love it!"

After that early strike from Adams, the game was turned on its head in the space of two second-half minutes as goals from Jonathan Afolabi and Morgan Boyes (own goal) earned the Republic a 2-1 victory.

Huggins's reintroduction to the international scene comes after what has been an encouraging few months for him at Elland Road.

He was handed a Premier League debut by Marcelo Bielsa during a high-scoring defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium after putting pen to paper on a new contract at the end of last year.

As a result, the York-born right-back is now committed to the Whites' cause until the end of the 2022/2023 season.
