Niall Currie steps down as Carrick Rangers manager

Niall Currie announced his resignation as Carrick Rangers manager in the aftermath of Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Portadown.

The outgoing boss said it was with a "heavy heart" that he had called time on his tenure with the club.

Currie became Carrick manager following the club's relegation from the Irish Premiership in 2018 and led them straight back from the Championship the next season.

They sit 11th in the table with two games remaining this season.

Currie was contracted to the club to the end of the 2022-23 season after signing an extension last October, but now his time has come to an end.

"Unfortunately circumstances have come into play, and it's with a real heavy heart I am resigning as Carrick Rangers football manager," Currie told the BBC.

"The club has been brilliant. I have loved mostly every second of it.

"Firstly, I'd like to thank the supporters for being fantastic with me from day one. The support I got since I came to he club has been second to none.

"And I'd like to thank the players. It has been a great three years. I have enjoyed myself immensely with these boys. They have given me every drop.

"They have been wonderful for me, and it is with a really heavy heart that I have come to this decision."

Carrick issued a brief statement on their social media on Saturday evening.

It read: "Today, Niall Currie resigned as First Team Manager of Carrick Rangers FC.

" Everyone at the Club would like to place on record our thanks to Niall for all of his hard work during his time in charge, and wish him well for the future."
